You fund the promo. Sales jump while the scheme runs. Then it ends, and your distributors and shop owners go back to selling whichever brand pays them best this month.

If that sounds familiar, the problem is rarely your product or your price. Discounts buy a sale, not loyalty. Every dollar of trade spend disappears into margin, partners learn to wait for the next scheme, and a competitor with a slightly better offer can pull them away. As the owner, you end up paying more each cycle just to stay where you are.

The fix is to make partners feel recognized, not just discounted. Here is what that looks like in practice.

## **Why Do Discounts Stop Working?**

Three reasons owners run into again and again:

1. **They are easy to copy.** A competitor can match your discount in a week.
2. **They train partners to wait.** If there is always a scheme coming, there is no reason to commit now.
3. **They leave nothing behind.** Once the scheme ends, so does the reason to prioritize your products.

Rewards work differently because they attach to effort. A partner who hits a target and receives something they actually want remembers who gave it to them.

The numbers back this up:

- - - Non-cash rewards can lift channel incentive program revenue by up to 32% and market share by up to 30% (Incentive Research Foundation).
          - In one case study, enrolled B2B customers grew sales by 25% on average, versus 5% for those not enrolled (Brandmovers).
          - Indonesia's loyalty market is projected to grow by 18.2% annually, reaching US$814.7 million by 2026, so more brands are competing for your partners' attention (ResearchAndMarkets.com).

## **Why Does One Scheme for Everyone Waste Your Budget?**

A distributor chasing annual volume and a small shop owner who wants something tangible this week are not motivated by the same thing. When everyone gets the same scheme, two things happen. Partners who would have hit target anyway collect rewards they did not need, and partners who are far from target quietly give up.

The smarter approach is to run a separate program for each level of the chain:

1. **Distributors:** volume and target-based rewards tied to bigger goals
2. **GT retailers:** quick, tangible incentives they can get right away
3. **Consumers:** points, instant rewards, and on-pack promos

Segmenting this way means your budget goes where it actually changes behavior. You stop paying for sales that would have happened anyway, and you can see what each level of the chain gives back.

## **Which Reward Formats Actually Get People Excited?**

The best programs are simple to join and fun to take part in. These formats work well:

1. **Gift with Purchase (GWP):** Buy a set amount, get a gift automatically. Good for bigger orders and for pushing a new product.
2. **Lucky Draw:** Open to partners who hit target and to consumers who join a promo. The chance of winning keeps people engaged.
3. **Spin the Wheel:** A game mechanic that turns a qualifying purchase or scan into a moment of anticipation. It is quick to understand and easy to talk about.
4. **Scratch card inside the packaging:** The reward is revealed the moment the pack is opened, which makes the win instant and tangible for both retailers and consumers.
5. **Scan QR on packaging:** Big buyers scan to claim rewards tied to their volume, and everyday consumers scan their own pack.
6. **Unique code on packaging:** Shoppers enter a code printed on the pack to reveal an instant reward, like the code under a bottled drink cap that many people already know.
7. **Compounded loyalty points:** Points stack with every purchase and can be redeemed for big-ticket rewards such as a vehicle or an overseas trip, giving partners and customers a long-term goal to build toward.

Most trade promotions do not need to pick just one mechanic. A scan or code can earn points, a spin the wheel can reward milestones along the way, and the accumulated points can lead to a grand prize. Layering mechanics lets you combine the instant gratification that drives participation with the long-term goal that drives repeat purchase.

## **What Does a Gamified Trade Promotion Look Like in the Real World?**

Here is how a leading bottled drinking water company runs one promotional incentive program for both its GT retailers and its end consumers.

**For GT retailers:** The brand prints a unique number inside its carton boxes. GT retailers typically buy in bulk, then open the boxes and sell the items individually. After purchasing boxes under the promotion, a retailer joins the program by messaging the brand's WhatsApp account, entering their store details, and submitting the code. They receive an instant point, and it stacks: the more boxes they buy, the more codes they can submit and the more they earn. The points can then be redeemed for e-wallet top-ups, electricity bill payments, and mobile credit.

**For consumers at point of purchase:** For its gallon-size product, the brand prints a unique code under the bottle cap. Consumers send the code to the brand's WhatsApp account, where it converts into points. Points stack and can be redeemed for instant rewards such as e-wallet top-ups, gadgets, household items, electronics, and gold bars. Every five successful scans automatically earn a raffle entry, with no extra registration, because the system flags it. Consumers then spin the wheel for a chance at premium prizes such as a motorcycle, refrigerator, smartphone, or gold bars.

## **How Do You Know It Is Working?**

Keep it simple. Track these five things:

- - - **Sales lift:** how much more enrolled partners and outlets sell compared with those who are not
          - **Market penetration:** whether the program is bringing in new outlets and reaching new areas
          - **Product adoption:** how quickly new products are picked up and reordered
          - **Partner retention:** whether partners stay active and keep prioritizing your brand from one period to the next
          - **Redemption rate:** how many rewards get claimed, which shows whether the reward felt worth it

Programs that are actively managed after launch have been reported to deliver up to 23% higher profitability than those left on autopilot (nxlperformance.com).

## **What Does It Take to Run Trade Promotion at This Scale?**

Trade promotions are not going away. The goal is to get more out of every dollar you put into them, and to give your partners a reason to stay that goes beyond the next discount. But running programs like these across distributors, retailers, and consumers, and across more than one market, takes more than a spreadsheet and a WhatsApp number. Here is what to look for in a loyalty platform:

- - - **Multi-market and multi-currency promotions**, so one program structure can run across regions without rebuilding it each time
          - **Checker-maker approval before reward payout**, so every payout is reviewed and fraud is kept out
          - **Multiple gamification options**, from spin the wheel to scratch cards, so you can match the mechanic to the audience
          - **Multiple programs for different user groups in one platform**, so distributors, retailers, and consumers each get a tailored experience without separate systems
          - **End-to-end procurement for reward items**, so you do not have to manage suppliers and fulfilment yourself
          - **An extensive, localized reward catalog**, which matters most, because a reward only motivates when it is something the recipient actually wants

Platforms like Tada are built around these requirements, so brands can launch and scale programs without stitching together separate vendors.

If you want to see what a more rewarding version of your current promos could look like, we would be glad to talk it through. No pressure, just a conversation to see if we can help.
